Even with a large number of on-going community events that evening, we can say that there was a reasonably good number of attendees at the Concert with a good representation from almost all the areas of the DFW metroplex. Mr. Santu Mullur invited and introduced Sankara Nethralaya, the community work they do and young and dynamic Artists to the guests. The session started with the Carnatic session, followed by a Hindustani session and then the Grand Finale of the enchanting Jugalbandhi. The audience was absolutely spell bound and enchanted with each of these sessions played.   Kudos go to the artists for their unique selections of pieces to satisfy both the Hindustani and the Carnatic fans. As a Grand Finale, the artists played the renowned Vaishnavo Janato which meant so much to people at an emotional level. Sankara Nethralaya Alumni, Dr. Aravind Neelakantan, now a practicising Glaucomatologist in Dallas and his Wife Dr. Sandhya were present at the concert.  Dr. Aravind Neelakantan was all praise for the institution and thankful to SN for providing them the world class Ophthalmology training and to the Ophthalmologists covering all the sub-specialties with a focus on community Ophthalmology programs.   He made an earnest appeal to every one requesting them to consider donating to SN OM Trust and mentioned that every cent received from the concert would be put to the best use to support the cause of the foundations and the community. Alcon R&D employees were present at the concert.  Prominent figures included Dr. Gerald Cagle, Former CSO/SVP R&D, Alcon Laboratories Inc was present, enjoyed the concert and was greatly appreciative of the wonderful work the institution does.

CENTER FOR GENOMIC BIOLOGY

 INTRODUCTION

The completion of the human genome sequencing has resulted in the explosion of functional genomic research and augmented the possibilities of linking specific genes to a particular disease. Elucidation of altered transcriptional regulatory networks of the complex diseases at cellular and molecular level has necessitated monitoring of genome-wide gene expression changes and led to the emergence of cDNA microarray or gene chip technology. Microarray represents a technological revolution in biology, provides a powerful platform to the investigators for simultaneous analysis of hundreds and thousands of genes in a single experiment.

Ocular diseases and disorders are potential blinding complications in millions of individuals in our country. Our current understanding of the molecular events that underlie the origin and progression of several ocular diseases remains limited and specific molecular drug targets to prevent the onset or progression of these diseases remain to be discovered. The identification and characterization of disease causing genes is of enormous value as it would enhance our knowledge of biological function in both normal development and disease. Hence, application of genome-wide expression profiling and genotyping technologies to the prospective assessment of eye diseases is the need of the hour to gain incisive insights into the disease pathogenesis. These approaches will provide a novel and powerful tool to decipher modulated gene expression and/or altered biochemical pathways and identify candidate genes associated with the disease phenotype.

AFFYMETRIX GENECHIP FACILITY AT THE CENTER FOR GENOMIC BIOLOGY

Envisaging the future potential of microarray technology, Sankara Nethralaya has established the Center for Genomic Biology that supports the formation of multi-investigator, interdisciplinary research programs to develop novel and innovative genomic research projects. This center is equipped with state-of-the-art Affymetrix GeneChip System, consisting of microarray, hybridization oven, automated fluidics station, high resolution scanner, and a computer workstation with GeneChip Operating Software. It also has a NanoDrop Spectrophotometer for the most accurate quantification of small amounts of RNA and DNA. This facility is dedicated to providing gene expression and genotyping services using Affymetrix microarrays and is open to both KBIRVO and outside investigators.

The wealth of genomic data generated from the genome-wide gene expression and genotyping strategies will serve as an important starting point in the search for regulatory networks, novel biomarkers, molecular therapeutic targets and newer approaches to interventional strategies and effective clinical management of ocular diseases. It will also lead to the development of animal models and information repositories in ophthalmic sciences that caters to the research needs of the entire ophthalmology research community in our country in the 21st century and place India on the map of global ophthalmology research.
