From Stree Seva Mandir, a friend of Sankara Nethralaya


To serve the orphans, the destitute, poor and socially backward women and children, Stree Seva Mandir was founded by Chennagantamma (Mrs. A.C. Krishna Rao)  on 2 Oct. 1949, inspired by Gandhiji and Tagore.  The Mandir has no political, communal, religious, linguistic or territorial links.  Its programmes cover: (1) Institutional care. (2) Education. (3) Vocational training. (4) Employment. (5) Community welfare. (6) Rural Development.  The services consist of hostels, homes for the aged, day care centres, schools, vocational, technical and engineering courses, arts & crafts, medical attention etc. 

After tireless, selfless service, Chennagantamma died in 2006.  To honor her memory, Mr. M. Natarajan of Stree Seva Mandir donated a sum of Rs. 5 lakh on 28 March 2009 during the 5th anniversary celebration of Navasuja Sankara Nethralaya.

Navasuja Sankara Nethralaya celebrates 5th anniversary


Navasuja Sankara Nethralaya (NSN), a unit of Sankara Nethralaya and a  multi-speciality ophthalmalogy Hospital completed 5 years of mission for vision, serving south Chennaiites.

NSNs ten specialists have examined 75,000 patients.  The Hospital offers  services to treat glaucoma, cataract and inter-ocular tests, treatment and surgery, all under one roof.

Dr. Vineet Ratra of NSN highlighted the facilities that is available in NSN for computer vision syndrome.  Chief Guest Vairamuthu also voiced his concern arising out of this syndrome due to long hours on the computer and praised NSN on its initiative to treat this disorder.

Round Tablers second annual donation to Sankara Nethralaya

K. Srikkanth pledged a dear bat autographed by the Indian Team and handed it to SN to help it raise funds through auction. He urged SN to co-opt more celebrites from sports and films to further SN's cause.
Rays of 95 is a community effort started in 2007 to serve the needy who required, but cannot afford expensive eye care.

SN felicitates Prasanna, musician of Oscar - winning short documentry
"Smile Pinki"


Mr. R. Prasanna, the famous guitarist, who can play carnatic music on guitar, was invited by Sankara Nethralaya, whose ardent well-wisher he is, to share his experiences of composing music for Smile Pinki, which won the 2008 Oscar for the best short documentary film. He was honored by "Mellisai Mannar" M.S. Viswanathan, who spoke very highly of Mr. Prasanna. Sri S.P. Muthuraman and Mr. A.V.M. Saravanan also felicitated Mr. Prasanna. Mr. Prasanna was overwhelmed and touched by the pride of place SN had given him. He offered all support to Sankara Nethralaya in its various activities.

Mr. Prasanna explained that though he learnt Western music like jazz, rap etc., such music is already blended in our traditional carnatic music, witness Sri. M.S. Viswanathans music and songs in 1960 itself.

Mr. S.V. Sekar, the renowned cine artist came all the way to meet and honor Mr. Prasanna.

Mr. Prasanna has promised to give a concert in America to raise funds for Sankara Nethralaya.

Free cataract surgery camp at Bellary, Karnataka


SankaraNethralaya, supported by our well wisher and philanthropist Shri S K Modi (M/s Bellary Iron Ores Pvt Ltd, Vibhutigudda Mines Pvt Ltd) have organized a Cataract Screening & Surgical Camp in Bellary, Karnataka from 25th Feb 09 to 1st Mar 09.

Our teams of doctors led by Dr Rashmin Gandhi, Dr Sandeep Mark Thirumalai, Dr P S Rajesh, Dr Bipasha Mukherjee, Dr G V Sailendar (Anaesthetist) & Dr Samaresh Srivastava have actively participated in the programme.

They were supported by the following team of paramedical staff including Mr Prakash (Optometrist) Mrs Uma Maheswari (Scrub Nurse), Ms Nithya (Scrub Nurse), Mr D Venkatesan (OT Asst.) & Mr Emperuman (OT Asst.)

Our SN Bangalore Teleophthalmology team was also supported by them in screening and dispensing of spectacles at designated venues identified by the sponsor.

The surgeries were performed at Jindal Sanjeevani Hospital, Toranagallu, Bellary.

The team screened about 1500 patients. Around 450 patients were identified for Cataract Surgery, out of which 262 surgeries were performed. Glasses have been issued to 505 patients.
